College football bowl preview

(12-17) 22:04 PST -- With 35 bowl games in a 24-day span, even the most accomplished couch potato needs direction.
The bowls are divided into four tiers of watchability: Tier I includes the three games you must see to be involved in any worthwhile college football discussion. Tier II games are worthy of being called bowls in the old-school sense. Tier III games are worthy of being called bowls only in today's overpopulated bowl world. People willing to sit through Tier IV bowls will be awarded the Couch Potato Medal of Honor, confirming they have only a semblance of a life:

Tier I - Season-defining games

1. National championship game, Jan. 10: No. 2 Oregon (12-0) vs. No. 1 Auburn (13-0) - The Heisman Trophy winner (Auburn quarterback Cam Newton), the nation's leading rusher (Oregon's LaMichael James), and points aplenty for all the marbles in the season's last bowl.
2. Orange Bowl, Jan. 3: No. 5 Stanford (11-1) vs. No. 12 Virginia Tech (11-2) - Bay Area team and the Heisman runner-up (Stanford QB Andrew Luck) face ACC Player of the Year (QB Tyrod Taylor) and a team that has won 11 straight.
3. Rose Bowl, Jan. 1: No. 3 TCU (12-0) vs. No. 4 Wisconsin (11-1) - It's odd to see TCU in the Rose Bowl, but if the Frogs win, they will be one of two unbeaten teams, and debate whether they should have been in the title game will be rekindled.

Tier II - Feigning illness an acceptable stay-home ploy

4. Sugar Bowl, Jan. 4: No. 6 Ohio State (11-1) vs. No. 8 Arkansas (10-2) - Two quality teams and two outstanding quarterbacks - the Buckeyes' Terrelle Pryor and the Hogs' Ryan Mallett, a likely first-round NFL draft pick.
5. Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1: No. 7 Michigan State (11-1) vs. No. 15 Alabama (9-3) - In preseason, the Tide were No. 1 and Michigan State was unranked. Now, the surprising Spartans are ranked higher, though still underdogs.
6. Cotton Bowl, Jan. 7: No. 11 LSU (10-2) vs. No. 18 Texas A&M (9-3) - LSU has a tough defense, and coach Les Miles is prone to making a weird decision that spawns water-cooler talk.
7. Las Vegas Bowl, Wednesday: No. 10 Boise State (11-1) vs. No. 20 Utah (10-2) - Boise State would be in the Rose Bowl if it had made that 26-yard field-goal try, and the Broncos love trick plays.
8. Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 1: No. 25 Connecticut (8-4) vs. No. 9 Oklahoma (10-2) - UConn is a nice story, but having a team that lost to Temple, Louisville, Michigan and Rutgers in a BCS game is embarrassing.
9. Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, Jan. 9: No. 13 Nevada (12-1) vs. Boston College (8-4) - Being at AT&T Park provides local flavor, and Wolf Pack's powerful offense offers a nice conclusion to a Sunday of NFL playoff games.
10. Chick-fil-A Bowl, Dec. 31: No. 19 South Carolina (9-4) vs. No. 23 Florida State (9-4) - Each played in its conference's championship game, and Steve Spurrier's facial contortions are fun.
11. Hawaii Bowl, Friday: No. 24 Hawaii (10-3) vs. Tulsa (9-3) - A passing frenzy will entertain family and guests on Christmas Eve. Hawaii tied Nevada and Boise State for the WAC championship.
12. Insight Bowl, Dec. 28: No. 14 Missouri (10-2) vs. Iowa (7-5) - Teams that were close to being really good, but weren't, and fading Hawkeyes are without their top rusher.

Tier III - Alcoholic inducement recommended

13. Champs Sports Bowl, Dec. 28: No. 23 West Virginia (9-3) vs. North Carolina State (8-4) - Both teams barely missed BCS games - but they did miss.
14. Outback Bowl, Jan. 1: Florida (7-5) vs. Penn State (7-5) - It's Urban Meyer's last game and icon Joe Paterno will be 84 years old, but the teams are not that good.
15. Gator Bowl, Jan. 1 - Mississippi State (8-4) vs. Michigan (7-5) - QB Denard Robinson makes the Wolverines interesting, plus Rich Rodriguez's job might hang on the outcome.
16. Humanitarian Bowl, today: Northern Illinois (10-3) vs. Fresno State (8-4) - The blue turf in Boise will mesmerize you for a few minutes, especially in HD, and Fresno has Northern California appeal.
